Method 4: Rebuild Photos Library on Mac. To rebuild an iPhoto Library, simply hold down the option and the command key and click on iPhoto to launch the application. IPhoto will appear with the following dialog box. Depending on what is erroneous with your iPhoto library, opt for one of these options. Repair Permissions. Rebuild the Photos database. The next thing you can try is to rebuild your entire Photos library database. It’s possible that iCloud could not be syncing because of a corrupt plist or file in your database. This is how you rebuild your Photos database: On your keyboard, hold down Option + Command, then open Photos.
- A side effect of signing out of and back into iCloud is that it seemed to reset my iPhone’s photo library sync state. It didn’t delete my photos, but once I was signed back in to iCloud, the Photos app was trying to re-upload my entire library (over 28,000 photos and 1,100 videos) back to iCloud.
- Method 1: Rebuild your photo library from automatic backup. Hold down both the Command and Option / Alt keys, and while doing so, launch iPhoto. In the dialog that opens up, choose to rebuild your iPhoto library. Select Repair the iPhoto Library Database and then open the repair options again and choose R ebuild iPhoto library database from.
I would like to restore/make a new Photos library to store locally from my iCloud Photos but I have not been able to find out how to do this.
It’s only non-intuitive to find the answer, because it’s usually described in terms of adding a computer or iOS device.
- Make sure you’re logged into the same iCloud account as your iCloud Photo Library. (Log in via a web browser to make sure and that the photos and movies are still there.)
- On your Mac, hold down the Option key while launching Photos.
- Create a new library (click Create New Library) and save it at whatever drive location you want.
- Once the new library appears, choose Photos > Preferences, and then in the General tab click Use as System Photo Library.
- In the iCloud tab, you can now check iCloud Photo Library, and opt between optimized and full-resolution media.
That’s it. Syncing can take a long time over a modest broadband connection if you have tens of gigabytes stored in your iCloud Photo Library. But it’s the only way to proceed if you want to have a full-resolution local copy, which I recommend, as you can then back that copy up elsewhere—to a local drive or to a hosted Internet backup service, or, preferably, both.
