However, while many people have their own accounts, it is not uncommon for some to share their passwords for the streaming service with others.

Now Netflix is testing a feature that could lead to a crackdown on users sharing their passwords.

Here’s what we know so far.

What is Netflix testing?

Some Netflix users have reportedly seen a message on their TV screens that said: “If you don’t live with the owner of this account, you need your own account to keep watching.”

They have then been given the option to verify their account via a code, which is sent to the owner’s account by text or email, it is understood.

Netflix has said in a statement: “This test is designed to help ensure that people using Netflix accounts are authorised to do so.”

Those met with the message have also been give the option to set up their own accounts, which cost between £5.99 to £13.99 per month in the UK, depending on the package.

They have also been allowed to put off the process till later by pressing a button which says ‘Verify Later’ according to Gamma Wire, with those selecting this option being permitted to continue watching for the time being.

The testing has reportedly been implemented to varying degrees in a number of countries, but it is not known how widely it will be rolled out.

What else does Netflix say about sharing accounts?

The Netflix terms of use suggest that accounts should only be shared with those you live with.

“The Netflix service and any content viewed through the service are for your personal and non-commercial use only and may not be shared with individuals beyond your household,” Netflix terms of use state.

A total of five profiles can be created on a single Netflix account.

However, Netflix bosses have previously said they accept there will be a degree of password sharing.

Speaking in 2016, CEO Reed Hastings said Netflix had “no plans” on a crackdown.

He said: “Password sharing is something you have to learn to live with, because there’s so much legitimate password sharing, like you sharing with your spouse, with your kids.

“So there’s no bright line, and we’re doing fine as is.”

Why the change?

Netflix has not officially said why it has decided on the potential crackdown in password sharing.

But some reports including by IGN, have suggested that with increased competition from other streaming services in the market, such as Disney + and HBO Max, taking a slightly stricter approach to password sharing could be on way forward to gaining more subscribers.
